An FC Barcelona star revealed that he has received a contract offer from the club and also the determining factor that could influence whether he stays in Catalonia or not.
Wojciech Szczesny was memorably brought out of retirement earlier this season when Marc-Andre ter Stegen suffered what was expected to be a campaign-ending injury away at Villarreal.
The Pole had to bide his time to make his debut, which came in January at the turn of 2025 in the Copa del Rey against Barbastro.
When Hansi Flick’s first choice goalkeeper at the time Inaki Pena was late for a meeting in Saudi Arabia as Barca attempted to win back the Spanish Super Cup, however, the former Arsenal and Juventus shotstopper gradually became the starter between the sticks and hasn’t looked back since.
‘Tek’ has become a fan favourite in Montjuic, who has undoubtedly had a lot to do with Barca winning both the mentioned cup competitions at Real Madrid’s expense while also closing in on a domestic treble thanks to another win in El Clasico on Sunday.
A fourth consecutive victory over the enemy this term opened up a seven-point advantage at the top and means the Blaugrana can claim La Liga with a win over another bitter rival in Espanyol on Thursday.
And after the 4-3 victory against Madrid, Szczesny, who signed for just one year back in October, shed light on contract extension talks with Barca’s higher-ups.
Szczesny confirms FC Barcelona had made him a proposal
“I don’t hide that I have an offer to continue at Barça for two more years. They have already presented it to me, but I have asked for time. I need to decide with my family what’s best for all of us,” the veteran told Canal+ Poland following the final whistle, before revealing that essentially the future will be decided by his other half.
“I owe it to my wife to decide this together and we haven’t done it yet. Most decisions are made by my wife and I am not ashamed of it at all,” he added.
“I was deciding about football as a professional, but this is an unusual case. We were all determined that he would come for a year to fullfil our dreams and then play golf again.”
Whatever happens, ‘Tek’ doesn’t regret lacing up his boots again and taking the opportunity of a lifetime to don Blaugrana.
“I was retired and I find myself with this. It may seem strange because Inter eliminated us, but this Barca right now is the best team in the world. What these young guys are doing is impressive and should have its reward. It’s a shame that we couldn’t win everything, but we’ve been close and we’ve built something very important for the future,” he explained.
Szczesny’s decision will influence how FC Barcelona moves forward
What Szczesny decides to do is integral to FC Barcelona’s future, and will primarily determine whether we’ll see heated competition for the number one goalkeeper spot with Ter Stegen next term or the German having an almost unchallenged experience as captain and starter once more.
