Meta Platforms Suffers Global App Outage

Meta Platforms’ (META) popular social media apps, including Facebook and Instagram, were down on Dec. 11 across much of the world due to what the company called “technical issues.”

The widespread outages occurred late morning and impacted the social media company’s core apps, as well as Threads, WhatsApp and Messenger.

More than 100,000 users experienced problems accessing Facebook at one point during the day.

Meta acknowledged the outage via a post on social media, saying it was, “aware that a technical issue is impacting some users’ ability to access our apps.”

Meta did not say what the issue was that had disrupted its apps around the world.

“We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible,” said the company in its post. A timeline for when service would be restored to normal wasn’t immediately provided.

Meta Platforms’ apps experienced a roughly two-hour outage in March of this year on the day of the Super Tuesday U.S. presidential primaries.

However, since then, no significant outages have been reported by the company. More than three billion people worldwide use Meta’s apps each month.

Meta’s stock has increased 83% this year and currently trades at $632.68 U.S. per share.
