Ryan Murphy claims he would have handled Cory Monteith’s death on “Glee” differently.
Murphy admitted that he regrets doing a tribute episode on the podcast “And This’s What You Didn’t Miss” after Monteith, the actor who played Finn Hudson, died in 2013 from a drug overdose.
Murphy stated, “I thought a lot about it recently and I wouldn’t have done that [episode] right now.” Murphy said, “I would not have done that.” It felt too raw and too quickly.
The podcast’s hosts are Kevin McHale and Jenna Ushkowitz, who played Artie Abrams on “Glee”. They also got their ex-boss to discuss the months that led up to Monteith’s death.
Murphy claimed that he was unaware of Murphy’s drug problems.
“I was foolish. Murphy stated that Murphy didn’t know. Murphy said, “I was the one who had to lead the intervention without knowing what to do or how to say it.” He needed to live.
Murphy acknowledged that he was able to talk to cast members and had a counselor available on set for the tribute episode. He also gave them the option of not participating.
According to the showrunner, he was “in such a blur” of grief at the time and felt “devastated” by Monteith’s tragic passing.
