Automaker Stellantis (STLA) is recalling 20,755 hybrid crossover sport utility vehicles (SUVs) in the U.S. due to a problem with their brake pedal.
The Dutch company said that some SUVs may have been built with a brake pedal that could inadvertently disengage while being applied.
Stellantis said it was aware of 15 cases worldwide where the brake pedal failed to work as intended. One accident has resulted with no injuries reported.
The recall involves 2024 and 2025 Alfa Romeo Tonale plug-in hybrid SUVs, and 2024 Dodge Hornet SUVs, which are built on the same platforms.
Stellantis said the problem is fixed by reinforcing the brake pedal, and all repairs will be provided free of charge to customers.
The vehicle manufacturer said 2,280 hybrid SUVs are being recalled in Canada over the brake issue and 134 models in Mexico. However, most of the recall is concentrated in the U.S.
Stellantis said that it has sold a total of 15,566 Hornets and 2,737 Tonale SUVs in the U.S. this year. Impacted owners will be notified by email and regular mail of the recall.
The stock of Stellantis has declined 44% so far this year and currently trades at $12.91 U.S. per share.
